Crash in the bombout!
In a good way though! We are currently in the process of cutting across to the new version of thebombout. There may be a period of instability over the next few hours as the gremlins that make the internet work do their thing. The new site should be live within a few hours.
Aussies off to a great start at the worlds!
It was a hard day and a very easy day to land but amazingly enough there were still about 40 pilots in goal. We had 5 Aussies in goal just missing Adam who dragged down the Brazilians in the middle of knowwhere. I am guessing that Australia will be leading the teams event after day 1.. GO AUSSIES!!! - Jonny Reports
Condor
Last night’s task seemed pretty straight forward. With ridges to follow on all legs we all knew it was going to be quick. I packed plenty of water for the trip but alas not enough super glue to hold the wings on when the flutter kicked in:( Lenny also met a similar fate. Chesters and Speedy are still walking out of the alps after pushing hard and getting very low. That just left Andrew to...
Ticks for every box on my wish list
As you can see from the picture the display looks very similar to the 5030 but that is where the similarity ends. The 6030 sports a completely new circuit board and faster CPU. The firmware, at least for the first release, is similar to the 5030 but there is new functionality planed for the future. We will have the 6030 at the Worlds for some real world testing and if everything goes well we...
Applying the theory
As hinted below, I approached last weekend with a slightly different tack – More on that later. In the end we ended up with two great days of flying. Spring was we and truly blown out by 9am Saturday morning. The wind talker was calling in excess of 40mph. So on a whim Karl, Ed, Simon S and I head down to Lanyon. That place is amazing – the wind was perfect. We all launch and have a ball in...
Altitude realignment... (Intro)
Here in Canberra, during winter, we tend to fall into a bit of a hole flying wise. We look at the stereotypical Canberra winter as a no flying period. We either don’t fly, travel away or chase the odd ridge soar at Spring to meet the minimum currency requirements until summer comes back into view. Why do we collectively write off nearly half the year? Granted, the weather is the major factor but...
New Flytec instruments on way!
Flytec are making a new line of instruments to replace the current high end models of the 5020 and the 5030. The new models will be the 6020 and 6030. News is still thin on the ground at the moment but I will post more details as they come to hand. A little info can be found here

Newcastle = A fun crew to fly with
Last Friday I took off up to Newcastle. It seems no one else from Canberra wanted to fly – oh well As well as Mon and Scott’s amazing hospitality, I was treated to some fun airtime in the moderate SW winds. Glennies was the call on each day and did not disappoint. With no less than 10 people keen for a fly on each day we would meet at Singleton before heading on to the hill. After a futile wait...
Condor
What a close race! Congrats Andrew L on your first win! 350km and less than a few minutes between the finishers. Tracklogs here By popular demand I will post the condor flight tracks when I find somewhere to host them. I the mean time I will post them to the mailing list.
Newcastle this weekend
Fancy a road trip this weekend? Well we’re off to Newcastle to get wee bit of better flying in. Let me know if you are keen to come along. We have two spare seats.
ATC Funnies
Pilot: “Approach, Acme Flt 202, with you at 12,000’ and 40 DME.” Approach: “Acme 202, cross 30 DME at and maintain 8000’.” Pilot: “Approach, 202’s unable that descent rate.” Approach: “What’s the matter 202? Don’t you have speed brakes?” Pilot: “Yup. But they’re for my mistakes. Not yours.” More here
Condor last night
Another great race all. Google earth kmz file here. Race video is on it’s way…
Moyes out, Parer in!
Steve Moyes, the only pilot to attend every Hang Gliding worlds will not be making the trip across to Texas as previously planned. Taking his place is Adam Parer. Adam joins Scott as the second Airborne C4 in the Aussie worlds team. Congrats Adam! I’m sure he will do us proud.
Hang glider rescued after seven hour torment
Not sure who it was but I hope he’s ok. Emergency workers freed the hang glider at 8pm Sunday. A hang glider pilot has been rescued by emergency workers seven hours after he crashed and became trapped in trees at Mount Cole National Park, in Victoria’s south-west. The 35-year-old man from South Melbourne, had taken off from Ben Nevis peak about 1.15pm (AEST) on Sunday when his hang...
